"Claims that the second wife of Thomas (Sr.) was Elizabeth Browne, a relative of Nathaniel Ward and daughter of William and Lydia (Ward) Browne, are not supported by the recent reseach of Leslie Mahler showing that Lydia Ward, daughter of Edward Ward, married William Marken/Markham, not William Browne as has been inferred by the fact that her sister Susan (Ward) Browne, widow of Robert Browne, made a bequest to 'Elizabeth Browne, daughter of brother-in-law William Browne.' We would expect the bequest to have different wording if Susan was referring to a daughter of her own sister and there is no evidence that the maiden name of John Hawkes' wife Elizabeth was Browne."
