  2. [S2709] The Lancaster Examiner, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Wed., 26 Mar 1884, p. 6. "Henry Sheaff, one of our oldest and best known citizens, died Thursday night, at his residence, No. 540 South Queen street, of dropsy, in the 74th year of his age. To his intimate friends Mr. Sheaff was known as "Farmer" Sheaff, and possibly by this name he is more familiar than by any other. Born in Lancaster, brought up in Lancaster, and living most of his time in Lancaster, he became at last one of the marked characters in our social and business life. Socially everybody liked him, for he had a keen mind, a great sense of humor, the gift of wit and a fund of anecdote and acute [sic] observations, which made his conversation charming and laughable. To these graces he added honesty, uprightness and sincerity-qualities which always command respect. In politics he was all his life a consistent Democrat, but never a politician. He did his duty as a citizen and never asked public favors. In early life Mr. Sheaff learned the trade of gunsmith, but soon quit this business to engage in other pursuits. He was one of the ?rst engineers on the old State railroad and followed it for years. After leaving the railroad he began contracting and doing work in the construction of railroads. He assisted in the building of roads in the States of Virginia and Delaware, and in McKean and Warren counties of this State. For a number of years old age and increasing in?rmities have compelled him to live in retirement. He leaves a wife to mourn him but no children. His funeral takes place on Sunday. An old landmark in our history has passed away. Many will follow "Farmer" Sheaff to the grave and pay the last tribute of respect to a good citizen, a faithful friend and an honest man."
