The Fisher Genealogy (Philip A Fisher, Massachusetts Publishing Co., 1898, based on “The Fisher Family" by Philip Adsit Fisher, The Dedham Historical Register, states that Stephen Fisher was b. New Braintree MA 17 Mar 1770, and married Sally Cook, b. 8 Jan 1783, on 18 Feb 1799. It names their children Milton, Chester, William, Aaron, Rebecca, Samuel Thomas, Truman, Stephen and Ebin Smith. While the children of Sally, or Sarah, can be identified in the Jefferson Co. NY records, it seems unlikely that the Fisher (Stephen and Sally) are the same as the persons who settled in Jefferson Co. and were probably fron Delaware Co. NY. Where given, the birth places of the family members are given as Delaware (prob. Delaware Co. NY) or New York, and in one instance, Maryland. The conclusion is that Fisher has the names (except, perhaps, Cook) correct but the association with the Fishers of Dedham and New Braintree MA wrong. How this might have happened is lost in history, but any evidence to support the association would add much to this genealogy.2

James I. Horton went there in 1806, and was the first settler. A Mr. Mills was probably the second. Joseph Rider, Silas Taft, Stephen Fisher, and David Rider came not far from 1807. Harry Horton and many others were here in 1810. No village was established, however, and Chaumont continued to retain its position in this respect."
