Dr. Hoagland had worked hard in unceasing efforts to relieve the sufferings of the afflicted. He was stricken with the disease at 6 o’clock in the morning and died about noon. Thomas, his brother, prepared his body for burial, made his coffin out of a rough plank, dug his grave, and at 5 o’clock of the same day buried him in the family burying ground, marking the spot with a plain field stone."
